What is a Certified Music Therapist and Counselling Therapist?

As a Certified Music Therapist in Canada and Counselling Therapist, I follow Standards of Practice and am bound by a Code of Ethics. I use music within a therapeutic relationship to help people effect change. To be certified, I have completed a Masters degree in Music Therapy, a 1000-hr internship and a certifying exam. I also engage in continuing education and supervision to stay updated with current practices.

In Alberta, the profession of Counselling Therapy is in the process of being regulated. I am a member with the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta, which is a pre-cursor to the College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta.

What can I expect in a music therapy & counselling session?

In our first session, we will talk about your strengths and needs to see how we might proceed together. In following sessions, we may talk, sing, create, write and listen to music. I will support you in order to make your experience a fulfilling one. No previous musical training or experience necessary.

What can I expect in a free 15-minute consultation?

This will be a phone call for me to get to know your reasons for seeking therapy at this time. We might go over:

  • What has been on your mind

  • Your experience with music

  • Your music preferences

  • How music therapy and counselling may or may not help at this time

  • Setting up our first session or a referral to another healthcare professional

How long is a session?

Sessions are usually 50 minutes. This allows time within the hour to complete other counselling-related tasks such as documentation and billing.

Do you take insurance or do direct billing?

No we do not do third party billing. Services are private pay.

A detailed receipt will be provided for reimbursement if applicable.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 24-hour notice for all cancellations. Cancellations within 24-hours and no-shows are subject to your full session fee. We also understand that there may be circumstances out of your control.
